While it requires an extra drive, the stunning beauty and activities available make it well worth the trip.
Located in Southern Alberta, Waterton Lakes is closest to Pincher Creek (56 km away) and Cardston (55 km away).
From Calgary, it’s a scenic 3-hour drive (271 km) from the international airport.
For U.S. visitors, Carway border crossing is 80 km away, with Chief Mountain border crossing as a summer alternative.
Alternatively, the seasonal Chief Mountain border crossing offers another option during the summer months.

3 Days in Waterton (RECAP) + Map
- Day 1: Arrival and initial exploration: Explore Waterton’s scenic spot, drive along Bison Paddock Loop Road, wander through Downtown Waterton, and find the Red Chairs.
- Day 2: Hiking and historical visits: Hike Bear’s Hump, visit the Prince of Wales Hotel, take a boat tour, and hike to Cameron Falls.
- Day 3: Lakes and scenic drives: Explore Red Rock Canyon, visit Upper Waterton Lake, and Cameron Lake.
Please note that a Parks Canada pass is required for the duration of your stay.
Day 1: Arrival and Initial Exploration
Waterton Scenic Spot
Start your 3-day Waterton Lakes itinerary with a scenic drive from Calgary, treating yourself to breathtaking views to Waterton Lakes National Park.
Before reaching the town, consider a fun pit stop for a picnic at one of the scenic viewpoints: the Waterton Scenic Spot.
This awesome spot lies just outside the park on Highway 6. Here, you will see the perfect blend of the Prairies, mountains, and the picturesque Waterton valley.
Bison Paddock Loop Road
Then, enter Waterton Lakes National Park. You’ll need a valid Parks Canada pass. And continue your adventure along the Bison Paddock Loop Road.
It’s a short yet scenic route at the park’s northern boundary, just off Highway 6. You will be treated to the sight of majestic plains bison, a symbol of the park’s natural heritage.
Waterton Lakes National Park has had a bison herd within its paddock since 1952. Unfortunately, the devastating Kenow Wildfire of August 2017 required the relocation of these bison.
But, these iconic creatures have returned through dedicated efforts, allowing visitors to marvel at them during a leisurely drive along Bison Paddock Loop Road.
Furthermore, within the fenced enclosure, you’ll typically find between 5 and 20 plains bison, including three bison calves born in spring 2022.
⚠️ Warning! Stay inside your vehicle. Bison are known for their unpredictable behavior and immense strength, so it’s essential to always exercise caution.
Downtown Waterton
Like Banff and Jasper National Parks, Waterton Lakes National Park has a charming gem town known as Waterton Village.
As you arrive downtown, stroll along the streets with quaint shops and cafes, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and amazing lake views.
This lively town has a population of just over 100 during the summer months, with around 30 remaining year-round.
💡It’s important to note that many businesses shut their doors after the busy summer season. So, if you’re planning a trip to Waterton after September, ensure you’re well-prepared with ample gas and food supplies.
During our visit in mid-October, we found half the businesses closed for the season. But with this insight, we arrived prepared and enjoyed exploring Waterton Lakes National Park.
Red Chairs
Before calling it a day, go on a little scavenger hunts with the kids and try to find a few of the four sets of Red Chairs scattered across Waterton Lakes National Park:
- Middle Lake boat launch
- Marina Point
- Lakeshore Trail
- Cameron Creek
This scavenger hunt is fun and engaging for kids, offering a memorable way to explore the park.
Day 2: Hiking, Historical Visits, and Boat Tour
Hike Bear’s Hump
Start your second day of this 3-day Waterton Lakes itinerary by hiking Bear’s Hump, one of the most iconic trails in the park. You’ll have epic views over the valley and Waterton Village.
The Bear’s Hump Trail is a 2.8 km round trip hike and is considered moderate due to its steep incline, with an elevation gain of 255 m. Despite the challenge, the hike is feasible even with young children. We did it with our kids when my youngest was 3 years old.
💡Keep an eye out for big horn sheep, as we were lucky to encounter them on our hike.
When you reach the summit, enjoy stunning 360° views of Glacier and Waterton Parks, the Prince of Wales Hotel, and Upper Waterton Lake.
There’s ample space for kids to explore and play. My boys particularly enjoyed playing with other kids hiding in the rock formations.
Visit the Prince of Wales Hotel
Continue your day by visiting the Prince of Wales Hotel, nestled in the heart of Waterton Lakes National Park
Since opening in 1927, this iconic luxury hotel atop the hill overlooking Upper Waterton Lake has earned its place as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1992.
Plus, during the months of May to September, you can opt to stay overnight at the hotel or try the afternoon tea experience.
Additionally, nearby trails from the Prince of Wales Hotel offer a perfect opportunity to capture the beauty of Waterton. You’ll find a few scenic trails perfect for leisurely strolls, allowing you to capture the beauty of Waterton firsthand.
Boat Tour
As you finish admiring the Prince of Wales Hotel, get a tour aboard a historic wooden boat in Waterton Lakes National Park.
There are various tours, each offering a distinctive and enriching experience.
Enjoy stunning views of the mountains and wildlife as you cruise Upper Waterton Lake from the Waterton Marina.
For a more hands-on adventure, rent canoes, kayaks, or paddleboards at Cameron Lake and other park locations.
Finally, whether you opt for a guided tour or decide to paddle yourself, ending your day on the water will be a memorable highlight of your Waterton Lakes adventure.
Starting April 1, 2024, all non-motorized watercraft from outside the park will be prohibited from entering the water bodies in Waterton Lakes National Park.
Cameron Falls
Complete your second day of this Waterton Lakes itinerary by visiting Cameron Falls right on Waterton Village.
Interestingly, after a rainstorm, the falls can turn pink, adding to its allure.
But what causes this waterfall to change color?
The phenomenon is attributed to sediments called argillite. As a result, these sediments tint the river pink or red when light shines on it. It’s pretty impressive!
Additionally, for an excellent view of the falls, visit the Cameron Falls Lookout, where a short paved path on the right side provides a new perspective.
Finally, ample parking, restroom facilities, and picnic tables are available at the lookout, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable visit.
Day 3: Lakes and Scenic Drives
Red Rock Canyon
Start your third day on this 3-day Waterton Lakes itinerary with a visit to Red Rock Canyon.
To kick off your day, start with a short hike to Red Rock Canyon. Located at the end of the 15-km Red Rock Parkway, this is a wonderful place to explore with kids.
Along the way, you’ll pass through beautiful spots and encounter other hiking opportunities such as Bellevue Prairie Trail and Crandell Lake Trail. Both of these are great options to do with kids!
Furthermore, take advantage of several viewpoints and picnic areas along the route to soak in the surrounding beauty and enjoy a leisurely meal amidst nature.
Moreover, the Red Rock Canyon is a unique and surreal place with its striking red color due to the argillite rocks.
You can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the easy 0.6 km Red Rock Canyon Loop, which goes around the main section of the canyon.
The canyon is carved by the waters of Blakiston Creek, which flows through it, creating small waterfalls and pools.
In the summer, the creek provides a refreshing place to dip your feet or just enjoy the soothing sound of running water.
Upper Waterton Lake
As you continue your last day in Waterton Lakes, why not spend some time exploring the beauty of Upper Waterton Lake?
With around 80 lakes and ponds scattered throughout Waterton Lakes National Park, there are numerous opportunities to enjoy the water.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that most of Waterton’s lakes maintain a refreshing chill, even in the midst of summer.
Upper Waterton Lake is a top spot for water activities, thanks to its size and convenient access from Waterton Village, making it popular among visitors.
For a delightful experience, head to Emerald Bay, where you’ll find a convenient parking lot near the water, perfect for launching a paddleboard or kayak.
Take a moment to admire the vibrant pebbles on the beach and make use of the available picnic tables for a relaxing meal.
Alternatively, explore the beach access at the opposite end of Cameron Falls Drive, complete with its own parking lot and picnic tables right on the shoreline.
This spot provides a picturesque backdrop for a delightful picnic dinner. In fact, we had the pleasure of enjoying one here during one of our evenings in Waterton.
Cameron Lake
As your day winds down, enjoy a drive to Cameron Lake, located at the end of the breathtaking Akamina Parkway.
Despite the 16 km drive, the captivating beauty of Cameron Lake makes it a must-visit destination.
Once you’ve arrived, you’ll see the pristine waters, inviting you to take a refreshing dip. Although, be warned, the water is freezing!
Alternatively, you can opt for a leisurely walk around the lake, taking in the views.
For those seeking adventure, the Cameron Lake trail presents an accessible option. This easy 3.4-km out-and-back trail on the right-hand side of the lake offers stunning views of Glacier National Park in the US.
Furthermore, consider exploring the Akamina Lake Trail, accessible from the Cameron Lake parking lot. This 1-km long out-and-back trail promises a delightful hike amidst nature’s beauty.
You can also do the Akamina Lake trail from the Cameron Lake parking lot. It’s only a 1-km long out-and-back trail.
During the summer months, take advantage of the opportunity to rent water equipment from Cameron Lake, making this an even better experience!

Moreover, as your kids explore the park, they can work through their Xplorer booklet. Once completed, they can return to the Visitor Center to claim their collectible souvenir.

How to Get to Waterton Lakes National Park?
Getting to Waterton Lakes National Park is relatively straightforward, and there are a few different options depending on your starting point.
If you’re traveling from Calgary, the most common route is by car. It’s about a 3-hour drive from the city’s international airport.
The route takes you through picturesque landscapes, making the journey part of the adventure.
For those coming from the United States, there are two main border crossings. The main Carway border crossing is approximately 80 km from the park, offering a convenient entry point.
Additionally, during the summer months, the seasonal Chief Mountain border crossing provides another option for visitors.
Furthermore, if you prefer public transportation, there are also bus services available from Calgary to nearby towns like Pincher Creek or Cardston. From there, you can arrange for a shuttle service or rental car to reach Waterton Lakes National Park.
