Where to stay in London with kids: Best area to stay in London with family
There are 21 different neighborhoods in London. So it can be hard to know which one is the best to stay with the family.
Here is a map of the London neighborhood to get a sense of orientation.
Below is a list of the best locations to stay in London with family. Here is the summary if you’re in a hurry:
[wptb id=11508]1. South Kensington
South Kensington is an elegant and upmarket neighborhood in London. But at the same time, it’s perfect for families. It’s definitely one of the best areas to stay in London with family.
In South Kensington, you’ll find plenty of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and parks. It’s also in South Kensington that you’ll find some of the most popular museums in the city such as the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. Both museums offer plenty of interactive activities for children.
Within South Kensington, you can find incredible playgrounds for your kids. One of our favorite playgrounds is the Princess Diana Playground. It has a large wooden pirate ship, sandy areas, and other fun toys that children will love playing with.
In addition to all the different attractions and green spaces, by booking accommodation in South Kensington, you can easily travel to other parts of London using the underground or the bus.
Although South Kensington is an affluent area, you can find great accommodation for families.
2. South Bank
If you want to be right next to London’s most popular attractions then you want to stay in South Bank.
In South Bank, you’ll find Big Ben, the London Eye, and plenty of activities for children such as visiting SEA LIFE London Aquarium, Shrek’s Adventure London, and The London Dungeon.
However, the area also has some incredible green spaces. You’ll find one of the best playgrounds in The Children’s Play Area Jubilee Gardens next to the London Eye. This sustainable playground is built of wood and has many things that children can climb and jump.
South Bank is also well-connected to other areas of London, and you’ll be able to walk to other central attractions too.
3. Westminster/St James
This quiet and elegant neighborhood is perfect for families that are looking to stay central and surrounded by green spaces.
St James area offers a good variety of restaurants, cafes, pubs and well-known shops such as Fortnum & Mason.
In addition to this, you’ll be next to St James Park, one of the best parks in London where children can do lots of things like watching the green parakeets, feeding friendly squirrels and playing in the playground.
Other lovely parks we recommend visiting with kids are Green Park and Hyde Park. They’re just a short walk from St James Park.
St James is also a great area to stay in London because it’s well-connected and you don’t even need to use public transport to visit popular museums, squares and historic buildings including Buckingham Palace.
4. Hampstead
Hampstead located in the North of London is a beautiful little village that is ideal for families that want to avoid the hustle of the city.
It’s a tranquil area with charming streets with boutiques, small coffee shops and restaurants.
Being next to the countryside, your kids can enjoy running freely in the meadows, playing in fields and playgrounds. Our favorite playground is Downshire Hill Playground. It has a big sandpit, swings and wooden animals for kids to climb on.
In the summer months, children will love swimming at Hampstead Heath.
Despite being further from central London, you can still take the underground or bus. We recommend the underground as it only takes 20 minutes.
There aren’t many hotels in Hampstead, so we suggest using Airbnb or staying at one of the following options:
