I’ve married a California boy, so I have the chance to visit a few times with (and without) the kids, and I get amazed each time.

From palm trees to turquoise lakes, snow peak mountains and historical sites, you won’t be bored in California. So here are some of the best things to do in California with kids.

As I mentioned above, California has many things to see. You’ll definitely want to visit San Francisco and its Pier 39, Los Angeles, and the Hollywood sign. You’ve probably already added the San Diego Zoo, Santa Monica Boulevard, and a drive along the 101 to your California bucket list. And I’m sure your kids have already begged you to spend a day or two in Disneyland.

So today, I’m sharing with you (with the help of our bloggers) amazing things to do in California with your kids that our a bit more “off the beaten path.”

Things to do with kids in Northern California

Northern California is a unique and beautiful region with unique landscapes, activities, and cultural experiences. You’ll find redwood forests, pristine beaches, and rugged mountains.

It’s also the wine country (which may not be the most kid-friendly activity, but there are still a few kid-friendly wineries.) Northern California has a rich history, too. It’s where the California gold rush started.

1. Angel Island State Park, San Francisco Bay Area

When people visit San Francisco, Alcatraz jumps to mind as an island to visit. But did you know there is another spot to visit called Angel Island? Accessible by ferry from both San Francisco and Sausalito, this spot offers family fun for all ages.

To get started, you will need to plan ahead and secure ferry tickets. Both Golden Gate Ferry and Angel Island Tiburon Ferry offer service. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure time, as the ferries leave promptly.

Angel Island State Park has a rich history, with it being used as a hunting site by the Coast Miwok Native Americans, a refuge for Spanish explorers, and an Immigration station. Be sure to take a moment to learn about history before exploring the island.

With kids, some of the highlights to enjoy on your visit are:

• Playing on the island’s two beaches, Quarry Point and Ayala Cove. No lifeguards on duty.
• Hiking to Mt Livermore or just walking around the island on the stroller-friendly trails.
• Check out the historic buildings on the island. Self-tour of the Immigration building.
• Take a tram tour (great for families with young kids or anyone with mobility issues).
• Bring (or rent) bicycles to explore the island.
• Pack a picnic lunch and find a spot on the island.

2. East Bay Regional Parks District (SF Bay Area)

An elaborate park system called The East Bay Regional Park District is throughout the East Bay area of San Francisco, in Alameda & Contra Costa Counties. With 73 parks and 1,250 miles of trails, there is no shortage of great opportunities to engage in healthy outdoor activities with your children, like hiking.

I have compiled a list of great family hikes that the whole family will love inside this park district! Due to the glorious weather and variety of topography in California, hiking is enjoyed year-round in the East Bay. The golden terrain in the Summer will leave you thinking you are on another planet, while the lush green of Winter will bring a sense of rejuvenation and excitement to prepare for the year ahead.

Many parks’ missions are to preserve the unique history throughout the land and protect the diverse vegetation and wildlife. You can learn about the role the rocky outcrops of Brushy Peak Regional Preserve played in the California Gold Rush or the remnants of a 10-million-year-old volcano on the outskirts of Oakland. The East Bay Regional Parks system has much to offer families of all ages out on the trails.

3. Golden Gate Bridge

Visiting the Golden Gate Bridge in California is a great way to start any day. Spanning San Francisco Bay, the Bridge connects San Francisco to Marin County and offers stunning views of the area.

The best spot to view the Bridge is at the Golden Gate View Point on the north side of San Francisco, which requires driving across the bridge. During peak season, parking near the viewpoint can be difficult, so I recommend to plan ahead.

If you’re traveling with older kids who love outdoor adventures, the Golden Gate Bridge E-bike tour is perfect for your family! This 3-hour guided tour will take you along the waterfront, passing popular spots like Fisherman’s Wharf and the historic Presidio. The best part? Your guide will lead you to either Sausalito or Tiburon.

📝 Note:  the bike tour is suitable for kids above a certain age and height, and parents should ensure their children’s safety by wearing helmets and following all safety guidelines. 

So don’t forget to pack your sunscreen and your comfortable shoes!

4. Lassen Volcanic National Park

If you’re planning a trip to California with your family, Lassen Volcanic National Park is an absolute must-visit spot! 

Here, you can explore the great outdoors and take in some incredible sights – from hiking up to the crater of a massive plug dome volcano to breathtaking views from kids-friendly trails like Manzanita Lake Trail, Devastated Area Interpretive Trail, and Bumpass Hell Trail.

And if you want to get out on the lake, you can rent kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards at the Camper Store. If your kids love learning about nature, they’ll love participating in the Junior Ranger Programs or visiting the Loomis Museum.

And in the winter months, you can even go snowshoeing. And the best time to go? I recommend it from June to August when the weather is warmer.

5. Six Flags Magic Mountain

Six Flags Magic Mountain, situated in Valencia, California, is an exciting amusement park that caters to visitors of all ages. This amusement park is a dream come true for kids (and adults) who love thrilling rides and attractions. Seriously, my two boys were in heaven here!

We started our day at Bugs Bunny World, which features 12 rides tailored for kids and families. They were so excited to ride on Speedy Gonzalezhot Rod Racers, a mini-roller coaster with a climb, small drop, 180-degree turns, and even a sudden stop before making the second lap.

We also had a blast at Sylvester’s Bounce and Pounce, Yosemite Sam’s Flight School, and the Whilstop Train. And don’t worry, parents – there are plenty of other exciting rides for you to enjoy, too!

Don’t forget to bring a backpack filled with cold and frozen water bottles and snacks to stay hydrated and energized throughout the day.

6. Universal Studios Hollywood

This amusement park is a must-visit spot for kids and families because there are so many fun activities and rides to enjoy together. From the moment we stepped into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, we were transported to the magical world of Hogwarts and all its wonders.

My kids loved casting spells with their magic wands and exploring the shops and restaurants in Hogsmeade. And, of course, we couldn’t resist riding on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey – it was truly a one-of-a-kind experience!

My kids also loved riding on Flight of the Hippogriff, a roller coaster designed for younger children with a height requirement of only 39 inches.

Another must-visit ride is Transformers: The Ride-3D, where you get to join forces with your favorite Transformer characters and battle against evil forces. My kids couldn’t stop talking about it for days!

7. Calico Ghost Town

If you’re looking for an adventure unlike any other, head to Calico Ghost Town! Located in San Bernardino County, this old abandoned mining town was founded in 1881 and became one of the leading silver producers in California until its mines closed in the 1890s.

When you visit, you can see the remains of what used to be a thriving community – from reconstructed buildings to mining tools. For an immersive experience, check out the Lucy Lane Museum with its interactive exhibits that will tell you all about Calico’s past.

And if you’re feeling brave, take a tour inside the Maggie Mine – an old silver mine that’s suitable for all ages! You’ll get to explore its tunnels and caverns up close.

You can also go on an 8-minute ride on the Calico Odessa Train that will take you around different historical sites within the town. Or, if you’re looking for a more fun experience, there are plenty of outdoor activities like off-roading, biking, and hiking, too! Let your kids participate in panning for gold just like miners did back then – it’ll be an educational and fun experience.

If you want to stay longer than a day trip, cabins and bunkhouses are available for rent. If you prefer camping, there are also campsites available just book a reservation in advance.

8. Crystal Cove State Park

This beautiful state park is situated along the shoreline and boasts breathtaking views of the ocean. It is a great spot to relax and spend quality time with family and friends, taking in the gorgeous scenery.

Crystal Cove is simply beautiful – it’s clean, quiet, and has gentle waves that are great for swimming on a normal day. My kids had a blast exploring the sandy coves and tide pools and walking along the shore in search of seashells. We also went snorkeling!

And if you’re looking for more adventurous activities, diving and horseback riding are a must-try, too! There are plenty of trails to explore in Crystal Cove State Park, but my top picks for families are the El Moro Canyon Loop Trail and the Crystal Perimeter Loop.

After spending an entire day at the park, we headed down to Ruby’s Shake Shack for some delicious fries and milkshakes with a beautiful overlooking view of Crystal Cove – it was the perfect way to end our day.

If you want to extend your stay, reserve one of the charming beach cottages at the bottom of the hill for an unforgettable experience.

9. Turtle Bay Exploration Park

When my family and I were planning our trip to Redding, California, we knew we had to include a visit to Turtle Bay Exploration Park. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! This park offers endless activities that are perfect for kids and families.

The River Aquarium was a highlight – we got to see all kinds of aquatic creatures up close and even touch some of them! The Paul Bunyan’s Forest Camp Playground was also a hit with my kids. They loved running around, playing on the playgrounds, and cooling off in the water feature. We even witnessed a fantastic butterfly release at the butterfly house – it was truly magical!

Another must-see for families is the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, where we learned about California’s mining history. And of course, we couldn’t miss the Parrot Playhouse, where we saw some colorful and talented parrots in action.

The live animal shows were also a big hit with my kids – they loved learning about different animals and seeing them up close. But the highlight of our visit was The World’s Largest Dinosaur exhibition. It was an incredible sight, and the interactive activities entertained my kids for hours.

10. Lake Tahoe

Located in the stunning Sierra Nevada Mountains, this beautiful lake is one of the best things to see in California and another perfect spot for families looking for an unforgettable vacation experience. 

There are so many fun things to do with your kids here. You can rent paddle boats, kayaks, or stand-up paddle boards. And if you love nature, you can stroll through the beautiful forests. But that’s not all; there are also some must-visit places in Lake Tahoe, like the Vikingsholm Castle, Eagle Falls (which has a short hike), Pope Beach, and the popular Heavenly Ski Resort.

And if you’re in the city, make sure to check out Tahoe City Commons Beach. It’s perfect for families with children because it has a playground, picnic tables, and even an amphitheater where you can enjoy free summer concerts and movies.

For some adventure, there’s also the Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park, or if you want to relax on a beautiful beach, head to the North Lake Tahoe Beaches. And for accommodations, I highly recommend staying at Granlibakken Tahoe – it’s one of the best family resorts in the area!

11. Columbia State Historic

Columbia State Historic Park is like a step back in time to the California Gold Rush era. Just a short drive from Sacramento, it’s an educational and entertaining day out for all the family.

To start with, the park is a living history museum where kids can try their luck panning for gold, take in an old-fashioned stagecoach, and even get hands-on by making candles just as they did centuries ago.

It’s an unforgettable historical experience that’s anything but dull. Then don’t miss the old-fashioned candy store – with licorice sticks and rock candy galore, it’ll be sure to sweeten your outing.

12. Pinecrest Lake

Pinecrest Lake in California is an ideal vacation destination for families seeking to enjoy a fun-filled summer break.

This shimmering blue lake nestled between majestic granite peaks and tall pine trees – it’s like something out of a storybook. There’s plenty for everyone to do here, too!

If you’re feeling adventurous, I recommend, horseback riding or hiking. And for those who love to fish, Pinecrest Lake is a great spot to catch some rainbow trout. One of my favorite things about this lake is that the water is shallow enough for our little kids to enjoy and splash around without any worries.

And if you’re planning to stay overnight, plenty of cozy cabins are available for rent by the lake with lovely views in the mornings.

13. Napa Valley

Located just a 1.5-hour drive north of San Francisco on Hwy 101, Napa Valley is the ultimate destination for families looking for a relaxing and scenic getaway.

With its picturesque vineyards and charming towns, this region is famous for its world-class wines, but it also offers plenty of activities that are perfect for kids!

Bothe-Napa Valley State Park is a great place to start, with its camping and picnic areas as well as swimming and hiking trails. For an educational experience, visit Connolly Ranch where kids can learn about farm life and nature while interacting with animals.

And for some outdoor fun, head over to Napa Valley Paddle where you can rent kayaks or paddleboards for a leisurely trip down the scenic Napa River.

The Central Coast of California is known for its beautiful beaches, including Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, and Avila Beach. They are great for surfing, swimming, and sunbathing. There are also great spots for snorkeling in Pismo Beach.

The region has several state parks and natural reserves, including Big Sur, Pinnacles National Park, and the Channel Islands. And, of course, the Pacific Coast Highway runs through the heart of the Central Coast region, offering breathtaking ocean views and scenic drives.

The Central Coast is home to several charming coastal towns, including Santa Barbara, Cambria, and San Luis Obispo, all of which offer unique dining, shopping, and cultural experiences.

14. Big Sur, Central California

One of the best things to do in California with kids is exploring and camping in Big Sur. This stretch of the California coast is beautiful and filled with beautiful water and stunning coastal views. There are lots of fun places to hike and spend time at the beach. There are so many fun things to do in Big Sur with the family.

There are lots of great places to camp in Big Sur. Camping does fill up, so it is a good idea to make your reservations as soon as you can. Limekiln State Park and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park are two great state parks for camping. You can also find private campgrounds like Kirk Creek Campground and Fernwood Campground. There is dispersed camping in the Los Padres National Forest.

One of the best beaches to explore in Big Sur is Pfeiffer Beach. There is purple sand at the beach made from manganese garnet particles. Another fun highlight of the beach is Keyhole Rock. It is a beautiful beach and well worth a visit.

Another popular spot in Big Sur is McWay Falls. There is an overlook off of Highway 101 where you can see the falls, or you can go into Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. From the state park, there is a half-mile walk to see the waterfall overlook. It is a beautiful 80-foot waterfall in a sandy cove.

15. Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is a popular family destination, thanks to its beautiful white sand beaches, abundance of activities, and year-round mild temperatures. If you’re visiting the California seaside town with kids, there are a number of things to do with children of all ages.

From beaches to amusement parks, Santa Cruz has lots of attractions for families. The area also offers plenty of ways to enjoy the great outdoors. A beach day in Santa Cruz is one of the best things to do with kids in California. With the refreshing ocean breeze and breaking waves on the shore, the beaches here make it an idyllic and fun day for kids to run around and explore the beaches’ exquisiteness.

16. Surf Lesson on the Central Coast

One of the best places to take kids in California is to take a surf lesson on the Central Coast! 

The Central Coast of California is incredible. It is beautiful and much less crowded than the beaches of Southern California. At the same time, the water is much warmer than the beaches of Northern California.

The Central Coast of California encompasses the beach towns from Santa Barbara up through Big Sur. Surfing is one of those unique things to do in Central Coast California.

While many beaches in this area can be fun for surf lessons, one of the best beaches for surf lessons is Pismo Beach!

The surf in Pismo Beach is fun and mellow, making Pismo a great beach break where the whole family can learn to surf.

Kids as young as 4 can enjoy a surf lesson in Pismo Beach, and with gentle white water waves, this is a great experience that the entire family can enjoy and bond over.

17. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is an essential California trip with kids with gorgeous views, many outdoor activities, and a fantastic Junior Ranger program. Located only a few hours’ drive from San Francisco, Yosemite is a great destination combined with the city by the bay.

The park is vast and will take several days to explore. Still, kids will love seeing the plentiful wildlife (especially bears), riding bikes in Yosemite Valley, viewing waterfalls, swimming in the river, and exploring the park through the National Park Service Junior Ranger program, which is a great opportunity for kids to learn about the history of the park’s geology and about its culture, including the original inhabitants of the land.

Parents will love that the park offers multiple difficulty levels of hikes, from short and flat loop hikes to more strenuous hikes for more advanced older kids. If hiking is not right for your family, you can still see incredible views by driving through the park. Tunnel View and Glacier Point are some of the most photographed viewpoints in the world.

There are also several museums where you can learn about California’s history and the history of one of America’s first national parks. Yosemite National Park for kids is a must when visiting California!

18. Winchester Mystery House

This 100-year-old mansion has such an interesting story behind it. After Sarah Winchester, a wealthy woman, experienced some traumatic events, she decided to spend $20 million building this strange and beautiful house. Can you imagine that? But it’s worth a visit! The mansion has 110 rooms, and the Guided Mansion Tour is the best way to see them all. 

We took the Guided Mansion Tour to explore the rooms inside this mysterious house. Our tour guide shared creepy stories about the mansion’s history while showing us around. We were amazed by the mansion’s weird features, such as doors to nowhere, secret passageways, a staircase leading to a wall, and upside-down stairposts. 

The mansion also has gardens and buildings to explore, a cafe, and a shopping center. And if you visit during certain times like Halloween or Christmas, you can participate in themed events at the mansion. I recommend making reservations online.

19. Legoland California

If your kids love LEGO, then Legoland is the perfect destination for you! There are so many exciting things to do and explore here – like riding the Dragon Roller Coaster, which takes you through a landscape made entirely of LEGO bricks.

Then there’s the Sea Life Aquarium, where you can see over 5,000 aquatic creatures. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a submarine ride and search for gold coins and pearls! The highlight of Legoland is Miniland, USA – a stunning replica of some of the most famous cities in America.

Everything was built with LEGO bricks – even moving boats and vehicles! To make the most of your visit, try to visit on weekdays when it’s less crowded.

20. Monterey Bay Aquarium

If you’re planning a trip to California with your family, don’t forget to add the Monterey Bay Aquarium to your itinerary! Trust me, it’s an experience like no other – from beautiful exhibits to educational displays, this Aquarium has it all. With thousands of aquatic animals to be seen, here your kids won’t be disappointed!

One of the best exhibits for families and fun places to go with a toddler is the “Into The Deep” exhibit – it’s a great way to dive below the ocean floor and discover an incredible underwater world. And don’t miss the “Life on the Bay” exhibit; here, you can spot whales, sea lions, otters, seals, and more on their ocean deck.

Plus, there’s a special Sea Otters exhibit too. For mesmerizing visuals, head to the Kelp Forest exhibit and prepare for fantastic underwater sights!

When visiting California, be sure to add whale watching to your list of things to do with kids – it’s an experience that the whole family will enjoy! Popular destinations for whale watching include San Francisco, Newport Beach, Monterey, and Laguna Beach.

My personal favorite is the Newport Beach Whale and Dolphin Watching Cruise – we saw so many dolphins and whales during our tour here! In Monterey, the Half-Day Whale Watching Tour is highly recommended too.

Seeing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat was truly an unforgettable experience for my kids. So don’t forget to include whale watching when planning your trip to California with kids!

22. Los Angeles Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Los Angeles Hollywood Walk of Fame is one of the most iconic attractions in California and is a must-see when visiting with kids.

This famous sidewalk, located on Hollywood Boulevard, is a must-visit for families with young children as they can spot their favorite characters’ stars along the sidewalk. Some popular ones to look out for are Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, Big Bird, and The Simpsons. Don’t forget to take photos with their stars for a fun and memorable experience!

Additionally, just a short 2-minute walk from the Walk of Fame, you’ll find the Guinness World Records Museum and Hollywood Wax Museum. These are great spots to visit and learn about various records and see wax figures of famous celebrities.

23. Los Angeles Venice Canals

The Venice Canals in Los Angeles are a hidden gem that offers a peaceful and picturesque escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Originally built in 1905 as part of an ambitious plan to recreate the famous canals of Venice, Italy, these man-made waterways now provide visitors with charming views and a tranquil atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll and admire the beautiful homes and gardens that line the canals.

There are also plenty of things for kids to do, such as exploring the walkways and bridges with the various wildlife like ducks, and butterflies flying around, and sometimes you’ll spot some friendly squirrels, here!

This place is indeed a great spot for a family walk or unwind and picnic, and it is definitely worth adding to your list of things to do in Los Angeles with kids.

Family fun in Southern California

Southern California is a vibrant and diverse region with many fun family attractions, activities, and cultural experiences.

The region is home to some of the most famous beaches in the world, including Venice Beach, Santa Monica Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Huntington Beach.

Kids will also love the world-famous theme parks, including Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, and Knott’s Berry Farm. It’s also in Hollywood, where the film industry has its roots.

Southern California also has many natural wonders to discover, including Joshua Tree National Park, the Mojave Desert, and the Salton Sea.

24. Catalina Island, Southern California

Catalina Island is just off the coast of Southern California and is a perfect destination for families. The Catalina Express Ferry boat takes about 1 hour and leaves from 3 different ports on California’s coastline: Dana Point, Long Beach, and San Pedro.

We have seen dolphins, whales, and sea lions on our ferry rides- it’s part of the adventure! Once you get there, you can either stay in a hotel, rent a beach house, or even go camping. 

Hermit Gulch Campground is a kid-friendly campground 1.5 miles inland from Avalon located right by Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens. They have spots for you to pitch your own tent, or you can rent a canvas tent complete with sleeping cots.

You may see deer, the Catalina fox, or even Bison on the island. 

From hiking to star gazing, glass bottom boat tours to kayaking, ziplining to shopping, Catalina Island has it all.

Be sure to feed the bright orange Garibaldi fish at Lover’s Cove and treat yourself to ice cream at Lloyd’s of Avalon, an old-fashioned candy shop. Take a hike on Hermit Gulch Trail for a stunning ocean view.

My favorite activities? Renting a golf cart to drive the scenic loop and playing mini-golf. Our girls loved the pirate-themed playground located by the boat terminal.

25. La Brea Tar Pits, Los Angeles

When you think of LA, it’s easy to think of theme parks, Santa Monica pier, and other well-known attractions. However, one of our top places to visit with kids was La Brea Tar Pits.

La Brea Tar Pits is a collection of tar pits in the middle of Los Angeles, complete with a museum and cinema. These tar pits have existed here for around 50,000 years and have trapped many animals in their tar over this time.

This has been great for us in learning about the history of this area, as many animals have been discovered in these tar pools and underground.

You can visit the museum and learn how paleontologists excavate the tar pits and find fossils. It adds more context and information and displays some of the findings. Then, you can walk around the site outside and see the excavation taking place yourself. It’s fascinating (albeit a bit smelly!).

A ticket is required for the museum, but you can wander around the outside tar pits for free. I recommend first visiting the museum as it will give you a good understanding of what is happening and what you see outside before you tour the grounds.

We visited with our kids aged 1-7, and it was easy for them to see and understand what was happening and to be excited by the big displays.

26. La Jolla Beach, San Diego

La Jolla, California, is a beautiful beach town located a few minutes outside of San Diego.  Its highlight, La Jolla Cove, is an amazing beach.  It boasts crashing waves, white-sand beaches, and seven miles of coastline with jagged rocks.  Kids can play in the sand, wade in the water, and explore unique coves.  

There are cute restaurants, shops, and plenty of gelato establishments from which to choose.

The thing that makes La Jolla most unique are its beach inhabitants, a massive amount of wild seals, and sea lions who have claimed the area as their own.  They are bold and unfazed by humans, providing endless entertainment.  It is not uncommon for humans to be required to swim aside to wrestle seals.  

You can typically get close to the animals on bluffs if you want a better look.  While kids shouldn’t swim too close, there is plenty of beachfront for everyone to enjoy.  

The seals and sea lions are there year-round.  Seasonally, you can also see migrating whales.

In addition to animal watching, kids can also participate in typical beach activities, like kayaking, surfing, and snorkeling.  There are several boat tours available.  Hiking opportunities are ample.

27. Torrey Pines, San Diego

You and your kids will love spending the day at Torrey Pines State Reserve on the gorgeous San Diego coastline. The city of San Diego has incredible outdoor activities for the whole family, and this is one of the best!

Kick off the morning with a leisurely hike up the hill to get to the top of the coastal cliffs. Climb up rock formations, through trees, and out to viewpoints to take in all the beauty. Explore several “side hikes” with the stunning ocean as your backdrop. You won’t find a hike with a better view! 

Finish by hiking down the cliffs and onto the beach. That’s right…you get to play on the sand and in the water (especially if you need to cool off) after a morning of adventure. 

Let your kids climb on rocks or throw pebbles in the ocean. You can even bring a blanket or towel for an afternoon of soaking up the sun while picnicking and playing on the beach. 

If you want to spend a full day at Torrey Pines, stick around until sunset and watch the sky light up as the sun dips below the horizon over the water. Your entire day will be filled with fun adventures and a dash of relaxation–it’s sure to be Worth Every Trip!

28. USS MIDWAY, San Diego

One of the best things to do in California with kids is to visit the USS Midway. The USS Midway is in the Marina District of San Diego.  The USS Midway is a naval vessel used from 1945 To 1992.  It is now a museum.  Your kids will love climbing in all the airplanes and exploring the ship.

Your kids will love this ship!  There are three levels to explore.  The top deck was a runway for aircraft. Now, it is where most of the planes are on display.  The mid-deck is where you enter. 

On this level, there is a video presentation about the USS Midway, as well as the hanger deck where WWII aircraft are displayed, a gift shop, and a cafe. The bottom deck is known as the city at sea.  This is where daily activities took place, such as eating, haircuts, and even dentist appointments. 

The USS Midway is massive. Give yourself at least 2 hours to play, but I recommend staying closer to 4.  The best part for kids is the ability to play pretend on the ship.  They can pretend to fly planes, pretend to be sailors, pretend to be the commander in charge, and use their imaginations on every part of the ship.

29. Tide pools at Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego

A fun learning activity for families to engage in while visiting San Diego, California, is taking a trip to the tide pools at Cabrillo National Monument. This United States national park is located in the southern part of San Diego.

It commemorates the spot where the first European, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, first set foot on the western coast of the United States. The park has a visitors’ center and a lighthouse where kids can learn and explore.

The best part about Cabrillo National Monument, however, is the tide pools. During low tide, visitors can see all sorts of sea life! Families can potentially observe sea urchins, hermit crabs, geoducks (clams), anemones, mussels, barnacles, periwinkles, limpets, and chitons in the Cabrillo tide pools.

The hike to the tide pools is a bit rocky, so it may not be suitable for young kids. The tide pools are only accessible during times of low tide, which is usually during the fall and winter months. Check with a tide chart ahead of time to see when the best time to visit is during low tide. The tide pool area closes each day at 4:30 p.m.

During the summer months, low tide typically occurs in the middle of the night, so you won’t be able to visit the tide pools during that time of year. However, you can still enjoy learning about sea life at the visitor’s center and hiking around the area.

30. Disneyland

One of the most popular things to do in California with kids is Disneyland. The Disneyland Resort contains two theme parks and three hotels, all created to delight kids with the magic of their favorite characters.

They can meet the classic characters like Minnie and Mickey but also find characters from Star Wars and Marvel, like Kylo Ren and Spiderman. Disneyland is also one of the best places to introduce kids to theme parks and rides, as it has a mix of thrill rides and plenty of family-friendly rides for all ages.

At Disneyland, kids seeking thrills will love Space Mountain, while younger kids can fly around with Dumbo and Peter Pan. At California Adventure Park, thrill-seekers will scream aboard the Incredicoaster while little kids can spin around with some of their favorite Cars characters.

Beyond the characters and rides, there are also numerous shows and entertainment. Kids will be mesmerized by the colorful fireworks and light show on Main Street and enjoy watching their favorite characters wave and dance during a parade.

It’s truly a magical place for kids. Even adults will fall in love with the joy found around the Disneyland Resort. It’s truly a place for families to create fun memories that will be remembered for a lifetime.

31. Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier is a must-visit spot in California, especially if you’re traveling with kids. It has everything you could want for a fun day out, from rides and games to fishing spots and delicious food options. 

The pier also offers stunning ocean and coastline views, making it the perfect place to take memorable family photos.

One of the highlights of the pier is the Santa Monica Pier Carousel, which features beautifully crafted horses and other animals you can ride on. And if you’re looking for some thrill, head over to Pacific Park, where you’ll find 12 exciting rides, including a solar-powered Ferris wheel and a roller coaster.

Don’t forget to stop by Heal the Bay Aquarium, where your kids can interact with over 100 different species of marine animals. And of course, make sure to grab a Hot Dog on a Stick and a Pier Burger for some classic pier food while you’re there.

32. Disney California Adventure

Disney California Adventure is a must-visit destination for families visiting California, located at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. It is the only theme park with a Disney twist, offering thrilling rides, live entertainment, and delicious food options for all ages.

We recently had the pleasure of visiting Disney California Adventure with my family – and everything was incredible! 

We were swept away to a magical land filled with our favorite Disney characters when we entered the park. My kids started the adventure by riding Jessie’s Critter Carousel, inspired by the movie Toy Story 2.

My kids were overjoyed to see their beloved characters come to life! We then moved on to the Pixar Pal-A-Round-Swinging, a stunning 150-foot Ferris wheel that offered breathtaking views of the park. Next, Nathan and I hopped on the Incredicoaster for an adrenaline-pumping coaster experience based on The Incredibles. 

For our smaller family members, we took them on an Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind – just enough excitement for them! Then, we explored the Avengers Campus. Exploring Avengers Campus felt like being in a superhero movie, and my two boys loved it! We also visited Grizzly Peak and Paradise Gardens Park, which offered plenty of exciting sights.

After our adventure ended, we grabbed some delicious barbecue at Paradise Garden Grill – it was definitely worth it!

33. Joshua Tree National Park

Exploring Joshua Tree National Park with my kids was an unforgettable experience. We were surrounded by stunning rocky desert landscapes dotted with the iconic Joshua trees, providing a unique and picturesque backdrop for our adventure.

This park is located in the Mojave and Colorado Deserts of southeastern California, and it’s one of the best places in America for outdoor exploration with kids. You can choose from plenty of hikes – ranging from shorter ones that are perfect for beginners to longer ones for more experienced hikers.

My favorites are Skull Rock and Cholla Cactus Garden hikes, which feature incredible, kid-friendly views. We spent hours hiking along trails that took us to boulder gardens, cactus fields, and lush oases.

For those who want to learn more about the park, I recommend downloading a self-driving tour, and the best time to visit is during fall when temperatures are milder, making exploring a lot easier and enjoyable.

34. Griffith Observatory and Griffith Park-LA

One of the must-see attractions in Los Angeles is Griffith Observatory and Griffith Park, located on Mount Hollywood.

The observatory offers amazing views of the city, along with fascinating exhibitions to explore, as well as a show at the planetarium (although there’s an admission fee for this). After our visit, we bought some souvenirs from their gift shop and had something to eat at their cafe while admiring the panoramic view of the city.

Additionally, Griffith Park is a great place to check out – it has over 4,200 acres of land with 13.2 km of hiking trails up to the Hollywood sign, biking tracks, and horseback riding routes – a great way to get some physical activity while marveling at all that nature has to offer.

The park is free! Just remember to put on sunscreen and keep yourself hydrated since temperatures in California can be quite hot.

35. San Diego Zoo

This 100-acre zoological park is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, boasting over 4,000 animals from 650 species. It’s an absolute must-see for family members of all ages! It’s incredible and huge!

Don’t worry about getting around – the zoo offers rides like The Guided Bus Tour, Kangaroo Bus, and Skyfari Aerial Tram to take you to different areas quickly. 

There are so many excellent exhibits at the San Diego Zoo that you shouldn’t miss – like the Koala Colony, Elephant Odyssey, and Komodo Kingdom where you can see lizards, alligators, and crocodiles, don’t worry I know it sounds scary but, it’s 100%!

I also recommend the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp for outdoor fun, where your kids can challenge themselves on rope bridges. 

Don’t forget to shop at the souvenir shop for some unique souvenirs. And after a day of fun at the zoo, grab some delicious barbeque at Sydney’s Grill! 

📝 Note: bring your own snacks and water bottle, and wear sunscreen, sunglasses, an extra shirt for your kids, and a sun hat for a comfortable visit. And don’t forget to download the San Diego Zoo App to plan your route and make the most of your visit. 

36. Sesame Place San Diego

Located just 20 minutes from downtown Chula Vista, this theme park and water park combination is perfect for families with young children – including my two little ones.

They absolutely loved it here! The dry rides at Sesame Place were my kid’s favorites, especially the Rub-A-Dub Sub and Abby’s Fairy Flight. And when it was time to cool off, we headed over to the water rides like Bert’s Topsy Turvy Tunnels and Ernie’s Twisty Turny Tunnels – they were so much fun!

The Count’s Splash Castle is also a must-visit for the younger ones – with splash pad areas and short slides, they’ll have a blast at this play area. And don’t forget to take a relaxing ride on Big Bird’s Rambling River – perfect for winding down after all the excitement.

And don’t worry about safety – the park offers Coast Guard-type life jackets available in all sizes for extra safety. When we needed a break from all the fun, we grabbed some delicious sandwiches at Grover’s Grill, for me? They have the best sandwiches, for real!

📝 Note: bring your own towel, wear sunscreen and a sun hat, and pack your kids’ swimming gear for a comfortable day at the park.

37. Exploratorium

If you and your family are science enthusiasts, the Exploratorium in San Francisco should be on your list when planning a trip to California. Situated right by the lovely San Francisco Bay at Pier 15, this museum offers a unique combination of science, art, and modern technology.

With indoor and outdoor displays, it is the perfect spot to learn through experimentation and exploration – especially for curious kids! One of the best activities to do with toddlers here is to try the Colored Shadows exhibit, where they can make colorful shadows appear on the screen using lights and a projector.

Other highlights include making huge colorful bubbles at the Soap Film Painting exhibit and seeing upside-down reflections in a curved mirror. Don’t forget to visit the public art exhibit just outside.

If you need a snack or meal, there are two cafes inside, the Sea Glass Restaurant and Seismic Joint Cafe. Parking won’t be an issue either – there are plenty of parking lots and street parking options available.

📝 Note: I suggest booking a reservation to the museum in advance. Though there are no parking areas inside, there are several street parking options nearby.

38. Palm Springs

Palm Springs is an amazing spot for a family outing, a popular destination for its warm climate, luxurious resorts, and outdoor recreational activities. It’s only a two-hour drive from Los Angeles.

Here, your kids will love the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which takes you to Mount San Jacinto State Park for some adventures or a cool break. At the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, they can learn about desert wildlife and plants!

For accommodations, the Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa has a water park plus heaps of fun activities for families, while Palm Canyon Resort by Diamond Resorts offers spacious suites and a wide swimming pool.

39. Knott’s Berry Farm

Located in Buena Park, California just a few minutes away from Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm is an absolute must for anyone visiting Southern California. Whether you’re looking for thrilling coasters or family-friendly rides and activities, this theme park has something for everyone.

The Camp Snoopy area is great for families with young ones, where they can ride the ever-popular Camp Bus – spinning both clockwise and counterclockwise – as well as the Charlie Brown’s Kite Flyer a gentle spinning swing that’s perfect for all ages. Grand Sierra Railroad and the High Sierra Ferris Wheel are also a must-do here!

In addition to all of the amazing attractions, Knott’s also offers plenty of stores and restaurants such as Knott’s California for souvenirs, Mrs. Knotts’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant, and there’s even Starbucks if you need a caffeine break!

Tickets can be purchased at the entrance so there’s no need to plan ahead; just show up ready to make lasting memories with your loved ones!
