There are so many fun things to do in Lake Tahoe with kids that you’ll want to come back year after year.

Lake Tahoe holds a special place in our hearts since it’s one of the first places Nathan showed me around on my first visit to California. It was love at first sight and my happy (California) place since then.

So today, I’m sharing with you our favorite things to do in Lake Tahoe with kids (and in the surroundings).

Things to Do in Lake Tahoe With Kids

Lake Tahoe is the perfect place for kids, with many family activities to choose from. From renting paddle boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards (SUP) in several locations around Lake Tahoe to hiking in the pine forests, you won’t be bored in Lake Tahoe.

Things to Do at Emerald Bay State Park

Emerald Bay State Park is halfway between Tahoe City and South Lake Tahoe. It’s perfect for a day trip or camping overnight stay.

This 1,500-acre park lies on the southern side of Lake Tahoe and offers some of the best views of the lake and surrounding area. 

The park has an idyllic setting with a pure blue lake adjacent to green forests and golden beaches. 

There are several family-friendly hiking trails within the park. Families can hike the moderately difficult 7-kilometer Emerald Point Trail, the 4-kilometer Eagle Bay Loop, or the challenging 16-kilometer Rubicon Trail. 

Alternatively, if you enjoy water sports, you can go kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding or just relax on a sandy beach. 

Don’t miss the Inspiration Point viewpoint on your way into the park, which has fantastic views of the lake.

Here are the best things to do with kids in Lake Tahoe in the Emerald Bay State Park area.

1. Vikingsholm Castle

This quirky, 38-room summer residence was one of the first summer homes built at Lake Tahoe.

It was constructed in 1929 and is considered one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture outside Scandinavia. 

Visitors must park in the parking lot on Highway 89 and descend a steep, one-mile trail to the castle. It is a leg-burning uphill walk back to your car, but so worth it.

The grounds of the Castle are free and open to visitors year-round. However, in the summer months (May to September), you can also take fee-paying, 30-minute guided tours of Vikingsholm to discover its stories and history.

Children under 7 enter for free, and all proceeds go towards the upkeep of the house. Vikingsholm is still worth visiting in winter due to its stunning alpine and lakeside setting. 

There is nice lake access and a beach right by the castle to enjoy the cool water of Lake Tahoe.

2. Eagle Falls

The hike to Eagle Falls is a short trail of approximately 3.1 kilometers round trip. You will see the best that Lake Tahoe has to offer on this easy trail, including blue lakes, pine forests, and pretty waterfalls. 

The trail is generally flat with a few steep sections, but it is manageable with kids and appropriate footwear. 

Due to its easy grade, the Eagle Falls path gets very busy on weekends and in peak season, so arrive early to avoid the crowds. 

If you don’t feel like hiking much, you can park along the road and enjoy the top of the waterfalls. It’s a short walk, and kids will enjoy cooling off in the tiny natural pool at the top of the waterfalls.

3. Fannette Island

You can visit Fannette Island, Lake Tahoe’s only island, by kayak or as part of a sightseeing boat trip. Once on the small island, you can see the ruins of a tea house that belonged to Vikingsholm. 

Kayaks can be rented from the beach adjacent to Vikingsholm Castle, one mile from the parking lot. It only takes around 15 minutes to reach Fannette Island by kayak.

Note that it is not allowed to attempt swimming to Fannette Island.

Things to Do in South Lake Tahoe with Kids

South Lake Tahoe is located on the South side of the lake, adjacent to the town of Staline in Nevada. It’s the resort city of Lake Tahoe with restaurants, bars, nearby casinos, and ski resorts.

But don’t worry, there are also nice beaches, forests, and campgrounds, such as the historic Camp Richardson.

Here are the best things to do with kids in South Lake Tahoe Area.

4. Pope Beach

This gorgeous, long sandy beach is located just off  Highway 89. The water here is crystal clear and is ideal for swimming with kids.

There are pine trees for shade, picnic tables, and toilets on site. This quiet beach is a great place to spend a few hours relaxing and soaking up the views. 

There is a $10 parking fee to enter the beach. It’s located right next to Camp Richardson, where you can have access if you are a guest.

5. Heavenly Ski Resort

Heavenly Ski Resort is one of the most popular ski resorts in the area. It is a fun Lake Tahoe location to visit with kids all year round.

In winter, families can enjoy a scenic gondola ride up Heavenly Mountain. The 2.4-mile ride starts in Heavenly Village and provides incredible views of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains. You can find gondola times and prices here.

In summer, families can enjoy the activities at Epic Discovery, including the Ridge Rider Mountain Coaster (a gravity-powered alpine coaster) or the 25-foot tall Granite Peak climbing wall.

Plus, kids will love the adrenaline rush of summer and winter tubing. There are two summer tubing routes: a 500-foot-long hill for older children and adults or a shorter 250-foot run for younger children. 

Or, if you prefer less adrenaline-charged activities, you can try your hand at Gemstone Panning.

Allocate some time to visit Heavenly Village, which has over 40 boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. The shopping center has an outdoor ice rink in winter and an 18-hole mini golf course in summer. 

6. Tallac Historic Site

This heritage site features the early 20th-century Pope Estate, which is free to visit year-round. 

In summer, you can join different fee-paying tours of the estate.

An ideal tour for kids is the short, one-hour Pope House tour. This includes the estate gardens and arboretum and a tour of the fully furnished house.

7. Taylor Creek Visitor Center

The visitors center provides a fun and informative introduction to all that Lake Tahoe has to offer. You can pick up maps, pamphlets, and wilderness permits here. 

Kids will like the Stream Profile Chamber, an underground chamber with a glass wall so you can see beneath the stream outside. 

There are also four easy and accessible hiking trails that start from the center, which encompass forests, rivers, and beaches.

The center is free to visit and is open from June to the end of October.

Things to Do in Tahoe City with Kids

Tahoe City is located near the Truckee River and is known for its river rafting float, swimming, hiking, and park. Here are the best things to do in Lake Tahoe with kids in the Tahoe City area.

8. Tahoe City Public Beach

Tahoe City Commons Beach is a fun, lively beach to visit with kids. 

The 4-acre park has a playground, grass areas for games, picnic sites, and an amphitheater. 

This beach hosts free music concerts and outdoor movies in the summer. 

9. Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park

There are three Treetop Adventure Parks at Lake Tahoe, where kids can challenge themselves on rope courses and go zip lining whilst enjoying fantastic views from suspension bridges and tree platforms. Each Tahoe park has a minimum age limit of 6 years old. 

The Tahoe City location has beginner, intermediate, and advanced high rope courses consisting of 97 tree platforms and 27 zip lines. A full circuit will take around two hours. Choose the right course for your family here.

10. North Lake Tahoe Beaches

Sand Harbor is one of the most beautiful beaches on Lake Tahoe’s north shore. This beach gets very busy in summer, so arrive early to bag your spot. 

There are several trails you can hike in this area, including the accessible Sand Point Nature Trail. 

Alternatively, hire bikes and explore the Tahoe East Shore Trail. This short, 3-mile paved trail follows the Nevada shoreline of Lake Tahoe and has incredible views.

Kid-friendly Kings Beach is another great choice for families.

In addition to the golden sandy beach, there is a playground, volleyball courts, and a mini golf course. Ski hire is available in winter, and bike hire in summer.
