Where Is Baker Creek Mountain Resort Located?

Baker Creek Mountain Resort is located just 15 minutes away from Lake Louise, off highway 1A. It’s in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. It’s ridiculously easy to get there regardless of where you’re coming from. That’s because this resort is off the main Trans-Canada Highway.

One thing to keep in mind is that you’ll drive for roughly 15 minutes on the Bow Valley Parkway after turning off the Trans Canada Highway. I mention this because after leaving the highway, we thought we might have gone in the wrong direction. There wasn’t much service in the mountains, and I always get anxious when I lose connection with Google Maps. 

But from either direction (east or west), you’ll reach the Baker Creek Mountain Resort in about 15 kilometers after turning off the main highway.

What’s around Baker Creek Mountain Resort?

There are TONS of great things to see and do around Baker Creek Mountain Resort. It’s the perfect resort with cabins near Lake Louise. The resort is open year-round, but there is something magical to it in the wintertime.

Of course, the ENTIRE region can be your destination. There are endless opportunities for all winter sports, like: hiking, snowboarding, skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing, sledding, building forts (this is a family-favorite with toddlers), and so much more…

Here’s a small list of things you can do and see that are a short drive away: 

Lake Louise

Just 15 minutes away from Baker Creek Mountain Resort, visit one of Canada’s most popular castles, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and the iconic turquoise Lake Louise.

Banff

Check out one of the busiest “ski towns” in North America (if you can take your eyes off the view, of course). 

Natural Hot Springs

Definitely a day trip, but there are natural hot springs a short drive away. Radium is a town only 1.5 hours away where you and your family can enjoy a nice natural soak. 

Castle Mountain Internment Camp

It’s not the most pleasant memory to dig up. Still, there’s a monument to the former Castle Mountain Internment Camp that Canada used to house prisoners of war (though most prisoners were simply down-on-their-luck immigrants than soldiers for the other side). It’s located on Bow Valley Parkway and is worth stopping for.

In this review section, we’ll take a deeper dive into what it’s like to stay at the resort. We’ll begin with the cabins near Lake Louise.

What are the cabins like?

The lodging options at Baker Creek by Basecamp are broken down into 2 categories: 

• Stand-alone cabins
• Lodge suits 

In total, you have 16 cozy suites and cabins to choose from. This gives you plenty of choices depending on whether you’re travelling as a family, in a couple, or alone.

In fact, I’m even considering a solo trip for my birthday after a staff member told me you can see bears while driving along the Bow Valley Parkway. It seems like a great way to detox and de-stress for a weekend.

With that in mind, there is one thing that we should mention before moving forward: wifi in the cabins. 

The purpose of visiting a resort-like Baker Creek isn’t to catch up on the latest season of “Selling Sunset.” You and your family are (presumably) there to connect with nature and enjoy some time away from screens. If you need to work remotely, you can always consider buying a portable wifi-stick to stay connected (but again, it’ll take some of the fun out of the experience). 

Pro-Tip:
We’re parents, so we totally get the need for a well-deserved coffee–or Baileys–break while the kids watch a movie. If that’s the case, we recommend pre-downloading a few of your kids’ favorite Netflix shows or films so you can watch them offline. 

Our family stayed in the Two Bedroom Log Cabin which was perfect for our family of four. Our oldest (who’s 5 years old), was excited to sleep “on the top bunk” and our youngest (3 years old) was very comfortable in the gigantic bottom bunk. 

The cabin had a small kitchen with a cutting board with small teas, a coffee press, and other little goodies: 

Though the cabin was plenty warm, we also decided to start a fire. You can grab some kindling from the front office for free and use the complimentary firewood both in and around the cabin area. Had we been less tired from exploring earlier in the day, we could have also made an outdoor fire in one of the communal pits. 

While we haven’t stayed at any of the other rooms first-hand, we did get to peek inside a few other cabin styles while visiting. The standard and quality of our room was certainly no exception. It seemed like choosing a room at this resort was like choosing a favorite style of pizza: tons of options, all of them great.

What are your options for eating and relaxing?

On the site itself, there isn’t really a restaurant where you’d sit down to eat–at least not anymore. Unfortunately, a fire devastated Baker Creek’s bistro, so it likely won’t be up and running until winter 2022. 

For now, there’s a little cafe with some tempting food options, mostly appetizers or fun snacks. They also serve wine, beer, and ice cream (so… something for mama, papa, and the kids). And they have a gift shop where you can buy a few souvenirs for family or friends. We walked away with this Christmas ornament, as we like to collect them wherever we travel.

We ordered some food and other goodies from the cafe. The woman working was incredibly pleasant and even offered to help accommodate our early checkout. That’s because this resort gives you a free breakfast. Ours included:

• An egg sandwich (along the lines of an Egg McMuffin)
• A big muffin
• A Naked smoothie

But since breakfast starts at 8:00 and we had to leave by 7:00, the staff prepared it for us the night before. In the morning, it was just what we needed for hitting the road and getting the right fuel in our bodies for the day.

Again, this is all a bit unorthodox for Baker Creek Mountain Resort, as they normally have a full-on bistro for guests to enjoy. If you’re looking for a formal restaurant, the staff will happily assist you in recommendations. They suggest trying: 

• The Station (open Wednesday – Sunday)
• The Lake Louise Inn
• The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (apparently this place will also validate parking and take you to their secure underground parking if you show your reservation. Be sure to make one in advance!)

Now for the big question: how will you burn off all those calories from the treats in the Baker Creek cafe? 

The fitness room at Baker Creek by Basecamp

This resort has a fully-stocked fitness room that’s one of the best in the region. It’s perfect for casual trainers or more advanced athletes looking for cardio machines and cable weights. 

I’m a big fitness enthusiast and don’t like missing workouts if I can avoid it. Anyone who exercises regularly knows that once you break the habit, it’s so much harder to restart. The fitness center was about a minute’s walk from our cabin and had everything I could possibly need for a full-body workout. 

And if my wife or I had been travelling alone, we definitely would’ve taken advantage of the steam room and sauna. It’s located in the fitness facility (between the changing rooms) and would make the perfect end to a rigorous workout. Saunas also tend to relax and recharge you for whatever awaits the following morning. 

Finally, I don’t want to leave out the best activity Baker Creek Mountain Resort has to offer: freakin’ nature! This is especially true if you’re visiting with young kids. 

My boys and I spent over an hour building an ice fort from nearby snow piles while Emilie walked around and took some photos. We would’ve stayed for longer, but it was getting dark and everyone was starting to get hungry. 

The point is that no matter who you’re travelling with, you’ll have lots of things to do and see both on and off the Baker Creek Mountain resort.

Why Baker Creek resort is perfect for families with kids 

Baker Creek Mountain Resort is definitely a destination that’s perfect for couples and solo travelers. It has lots of romantic options for two, but it also has tons of rooms if you’re just looking for a bit of peace and quiet. 

But what if you’re travelling with kids? 

Luckily, Baker Creek is very family-friendly. This was a big deal for me because, for whatever reason, I really struggle with the amount of noise our kids make whenever we stay at a hotel. I’m probably too sensitive about it, but when we’re camping or staying in hotels with thin walls, our boys’ “meltdowns” suddenly carry an additional layer of awfulness. 

Privacy needed

In our cabin, we felt like we had the privacy we needed without being totally cut off from civilization. At any given time, we had access to a nearby phone for emergencies. We also had neighbours on both sides and could see staff driving around doing routine maintenance tasks. 

We even made small talk with people in the cafe and had a lovely conversation with other members of the staff. But once we were in our room, it was just us again, and we could comfortably get through our kids’ bedtime routine. 

Quality family time away from screens

Finally, we loved how disconnected this place is from the usual barrage of screens and advertisements we pass every day. I don’t think many of us realize just how often advertisers fight for our attention. On average, we see roughly 10,000 ads every single day. 

At Baker Creek, we were just a family playing in the snow, building a warm fire, reading books, and enjoying each other’s company. Our attention wasn’t split between billboards, commercials, Facebook ads, endless YouTube clips, and the infinite number of ways we’re usually distracted from those closest to us.

The added charge makes a lot of sense when you consider that most “travel” dogs tend to be larger with thick coats that shed. This adds a lot more tedious work to keep cleaning standards above par. 

Is the water potable? 

The tap water at Baker Creek Mountain Resort is some of the best in the world. Flip on the tap and drink up! 

Does Baker Creek have WIFI?

Yes. Baker Creek had WIFI, but the signal is slow and not totally consistent. That said, visiting this resort is to detox from tech and get back into nature. If that isn’t your thing, you can always purchase a portable wifi stick. 

If you need to work and plan to stream movies, it may not be the right resort for you.
